Twisted Loaf's Half Baked Review
Friday, November 07, 2014
The comedic duo Twisted Loaf were a success at Fringe this year with their 60 minute collection of bizarre, outrageous, uncomfortable and intimate sketches. Their sold out shows have now come to London for only a few days and Tongue Loose were there on opening night to witness the madness.
Firstly, there is no way to describe this comedic show - it's different. Twisted Loaf are so wonderfully weird and unafraid, as an audience member you're almost convinced they wouldn't care if you find it funny and laughed, but they will undoubtedly get a reaction.
The first ten minutes are painfully awkward and so incredibly dragged out but Half Baked isn't about the cheap jokes or the easy sketches, that becomes obvious when you've endured 5 minutes of a silent opening bit involving nothing but half of the duo awkwardly making an entrance and bringing discomfort to the whole audience with her silence, occasional bows and nods.
After that - Toasted Loaf intertwine their best talents from the theatre world and play on their musical, dance and knowledge of accents while mocking any other English class with spot on impersonations. The duo play off each other brilliantly and there's an apparent appreciation for each other's talents.
While it's all very awkward and uncomfortable with its various 'what is going on?' moments, the audience managed to laugh but it also highlights the fact that Half Baked is targeting a white English middle class audience and will go down a treat with its very specific white English middle class feminist comedy.
The success of Twisted Loaf is wonderful to see, and it's exciting that such an outrageous and out of the box female led comedy show has made it to a great venue in London. Half Baked is only on tonight and tomorrow at 9 pm and you can get your tickets here.

IC1s - In The Blink Of An Eye Review
Monday, October 27, 2014
Haven't heard of IC1S yet? Well you should be hitting yourselves. Finding their beginnings in the form of one bad ass drummer's record label (Gary Powell from The Libertines, if you're wondering) IC1s have picked up a following along the way, selling out music venues left right and centre. Now they are releasing a new EP to the masses, In The Blink Of An Eye.

The Riot Club vs Posh
Monday, September 29, 2014
The Riot Club has now been at the cinemas for a good week now, but did you know that it was actually a play called Posh? The play itself did not come out that long ago, in fact we saw (and reviewed!) the West End transfer of the show. There's only one problem though, we can be incredibly snobby with adaptations, so how did it work on the big screen?

Briefs: The Second Coming Review
Saturday, September 06, 2014
Where would be a better place for the boys from down under to bring their old school glam to than the enchanting world of London Wonderground? We attended the second coming of Briefs, an all male burlesque show was promised but what we got is so much more. There’s dance, acrobatics, striptease, stand up comedy, magic and tricks which culminates in a wonderful hour of an exciting show reminiscent of a circus performance.

Monday, February 17, 2014
Directed by: Christophe Gans
Written by: Christophe Gans & Sandra Vo-Anh
Starring: Vincent Cassel, Lea Seydoux,
Running time: 112 minutes
Release date: TBA
In a quaint little house in the French countryside, a mother tells her children a bedtime story. In the familiar form fit for a film based on a fairy tale, our off-screen maternal narrator recalls the story of The Beauty and the Beast whilst the visuals and cinematography bring the words of her voice to life.
Trailer Crush: Locke
We have NO idea what's going on, but Trailer Crush of the week had us hooked in only 1 minute and 32 seconds. We can't even imagine what the film will be like. Locke stars Tom Hardy and is out on the 18th of April. Let us know if you agree!
Berlinale: Galore Review
Directed by: Rhys Graham
Written by: Rhys Graham
Starring: Ashleigh Cummings, Lily Sullivan, Toby Wallace, Aliki Matangi
Running time: 103 minutes
Release date: TBA
Initially, there was a lot to root for in Rhys Graham's teenage screwball feature, Galore, and the premise was a promising one. It is a valiant attempt at an honest portrayal of the ups and downs of the lives of a group of Australian youths in Canberra. The main players of this stage are introduced as Billie, the unapologetic wildchild, Laura, the gentle-souled daydreamer, Danny as the baby-faced skater boy and tough, misunderstood Islander kid Isaac. The film breezes through the events that take place prior to a raging bush fire that will tear through and eradicate everything they used to know as home - a roll call of drink, sex, relationships and rebellion.

Why The Music Film Is Better Than Ever
Friday, January 24, 2014
With the release of the Coen brothers' latest flick Inside Llewyn Davis I was a little taken back from what I had just seen. While it is quite known how much love Tongue Loose has for the music film, this flick is quite possibly the most genius idea to come from the big screen in a while.

French Movie Adaptations Gone Mal
Thursday, January 16, 2014
Delivery Man was once called Starbuck while still in
production. An immediate remake of the original French film Starbuck about a
man who donates a shed load of sperm just to find out that 533 children have
been born thanks to his donations. Now as he faces a pregnant girlfriend he
also has to deal with being sued by his offspring who wish to know his true
identity. This which already sounds like a train wreck was for some reason
brought to the big screen with stars Vince Vaughn, Chris Pratt, and Colbie
Smulders.
We’ve drawn up a list of French movies which inspired a
remake in the US, and didn’t translate well. Some of their downfalls lie in
trying to adapt the films cut by cut, while others try to Americanise some
things that are too French to translate. Check out our list and let us know
what you think!
