So if you couldn't tell by the Hedwig and The Angry Inch review, we were in New York recently. If you're an old reader of Tongue Loose you'll know it's not our first time there. We didn't feel like tourists anymore. When you're going from a city to another city it's quite easy to slip into their style: tipping when appropriate, shopping for what you definitely don't need, going into 7-11 at ridiculous hours to buy a slurpee just because you fancy one, knowing to ride the six train...it's all stuff we didn't know how to do before, but now we do. We did do tourist-y things though, like go on a helicopter, and thinking it was a good idea to go to tourist attractions on memorial day (it's not). Things you learn eh?!
And of course, you have to pay respects to the city's history - going to places like Liberty and Ellis Island. The newest (and most controversial) is the 9/11 museum. How can you visit a place that is about such tragedy? It's hard to know what you feel about it. But you find yourself paying a visit anyway.
There's a lot we can learn from New Yorkers - customer service, air conditioned train service with cheap fair prices (but there is apparently a 2:1 human to rodent ratio in New York now, maybe that's why it's so cheap) but most importantly a love for your city. I know as a Londoner I can bloody hate this city sometimes, but New Yorkers embrace their love/hate and use it to create a vibrant and thriving community. I'm gonna keep that in my thoughts.
And this time around it wasn't bitter sweet coming back. In fact, it gives you much more motivation to make sure you're on that plane to JFK once more. You've gotta have that drive, otherwise what's the point? Thrive man.
Till next time, NY.
